What Face Yoga Teaches Us About Communications AND Apply To Join The Marketing & Comms Coalition

A few weeks ago, I attended a women’s networking event featuring champagne and face yoga.

This might sound surprising given that in my line of work my free time is dedicated to listening to marketing podcasts and scrolling Twitter for the latest in policy and legal news.

But, let me explain what face yoga has to do with communications for mission-driven nonprofits.

The stunningly beautiful Finnish blonde leading the session shared something simple yet profound: “What you do every day is what matters.” She was talking about skincare, but her advice applies just as well to marketing and communications.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that one big press release, feature story, or website overhaul will bring in all the donors, leads, or recognition we need. And yes, those moments can generate buzz and occasionally attract new supporters.

But, marketing and communications are about what we do every day. So, what can mission-driven organizations do daily to amplify their work and grow their impact?

A few things…

  • Answer emails and respond to social media comments. This needs to be said. Many organizations neglect their "info" box or ignore positive social media comments. Ignoring people who care about your work sends a message that your organization, and its employees, don't care.

  • Keep your website fresh. Post that blog post or media hit. A well-maintained website builds shows your audience that your organization is engaged.

  • Keep in touch—without asking for something. Newsletters and emails should share the impact of your work, not just donation requests. Relationships are built on more than asks.

  • Maintain clean email lists. Ensuring your contacts are up to date means your messages reach the right audience with the right content.

☕If we haven't spoken in a while, let’s catch up! Schedule a virtual coffee —no pitch, just reconnecting with friends and colleagues.
